Water is fundamental to the Coca-Cola business. Beverages are our business; water is the main ingredient in all the products we make and is essential to the agricultural ingredients such as sugar and citrus fruits that we rely on in our products.

Water also is vital to the health of the communities we serve and the ecosystems we all rely on. For these reasons, water is a priority for Coca-Cola. In June 2007, we announced our goal to safely return to communities and nature an amount of water equivalent to what we use in our beverages and their production.

We focus our water stewardship efforts in three areas:

Reduce our water use ratio (efficiency) while growing our unit case volume
Recycle the water used in our operations (wastewater treatment)
Replenish the water we use through community water access and watershed restoration and protection

Given the accelerating impacts of climate change, population growth and urbanization, we expect water scarcity to be a risk factor for our business. As a result, we are continually working to reduce
our impact and minimize our use.

Just as water is vital to our business, it the essential building block for good health and economic growth. We recognize the need to engage with stakeholders to understand the issues that are the most important to them and to work jointly with communities and governments in water-stressed areas.

We recognize a special responsibility with regard to water stewardship at plants located in areas of water stress, such as drought. In 2008, we made a system-wide requirement that all plants assess the vulnerabilities of the quality and quantity of their water source and work with civil society and governments to implement a source water protection plan by 2013.
