SHENZHEN, April 26, 2010  -  Coca-Cola China today launched an eco-friendly light weight bottle for its well-known drinking water brand, Ice Dew. The launch comes just in time for the opening of Shanghai Expo 2010 which is focus on sustainable development. Coca-Cola is the sponsor and beverage partner of the Shanghai Expo and the new light weight bottle will be available to the expected 100 million visitors at the Expo.

The innovative new ultra-light bottle is the lightest bottle of its size on the Chinese beverage market, and reduces the carbon footprint by 35%. Making it even more environmentally-friendly, the bottle is designed such that it can be easily twisted and compressed after consumption, thereby saving more than 70% of the space needed while the bottle makes it way to recycling.

"The introduction of this eco-friendly light weight bottle is a demonstration of the our commitment toward sustainable packaging which is one of the seven core elements under Coca- Cola's system mission "Live Positively" announced in China two weeks ago, said Andres Kiger, Senior Director Integrated Marketing, Coca-Cola Greater China.

"As a leading company in the beverage industry, Coca-Cola is committed to integrating sustainability efforts into every aspects of our business. We fully understand that our business is not sustainable unless we support sustainable growth in the communities where we operate. By launching the Ice Dew Light Weight Bottle, we are – together with our invaluable consumers taking a step towards a better and more sustainable tomorrow. Last year, Coca-Cola launched light weight bottle in Japan and consumers have been hugely receptive of this eco-friendly innovation. We believe that the new initiatives of Ice Dew Light Weight bottle in China will provide measurable benefits to the environment, and help raise awareness among our consumers. We invite consumers to join the 'I twist for green' campaign which reminds consumers of how every twist they make is helping protect the environment."

The Ice Dew Light Weight Bottle will be launched in Shenzhen, Xi'an, Xiamen, Nanjing, Hangzhou and other cities in succession in May, and gradually throughout the entire country.

"Coca-Cola is committed to innovation in packaging. We will continue to invest in creating more sustainable packaging for our diverse range of products. In Shanghai Expo 2010, two packaging innovations will be showcased in Coke Happy Pavilion -- Plant Bottle and Light Weight Bottle. We hope that these innovations will help to raise consumers' awareness of environmental protection. Coca-Cola is on track to decrease the packaging usage rate by 7% in 2015, compared to the base year of 2008. This will be equivalent to saving up to 55,000 tons in material. Meanwhile, we will remain steadfast in our mission to reduce energy consumption during our production processes, and we aim to decrease 40-45% of carbon emissions by 2020, compared to 2004" Au-Yeung Wing, Director of Innovation & Commercialization, Coca-Cola Greater China added.

At the launch, Ice Dew Environmental Ambassador -- the world famous hurdler -- Liu Xiang interacted with hundreds of volunteers by demonstrating Ice Dew 3-step for "Green" drinking: Choose Light Weight Bottle; Drink Ice Dew Purified Water; Twist for better recycling. He also initiated a bottle collection exercise in Shenzhen.

"Environmental protection can be really simple and fun. The Ice Dew Light Weight Bottle and the 'I twist for green' campaign show that if we all come together, the little things we do to help improve the environment can be both enjoyable and help make a positive impact on the environment," said Liu Xiang.

The production and launch of the new light weight bottle will save 16,400 tons in CO2 emissions, equivalent to 2,788 cars taken off the road or 101 acres of forest planted, and the lighter bottles will also help reduce carbon emissions in transportation. If all consumers will star twisting their Ice Dew Light Weight Bottle before disposal, it will save 410,000m3 in space, equivalent to around 200 standard-sized swimming pools.
